TMI: Ratangad to Harishchandragad on 5th to 7th Nov '11.

Hey mates, we bring to you our first hardcore trek of the winters. So get yourself ready for the same as we announce a 3 day trek from Chonda ghat – Ghatghar – Sandhan Valley - ratangad – katrabai – Kaladgad – Harishchandragad on 5th to 7th Nov ’11.

This trek will be more fun as it will include one fort-top camping (if possible this can be converted to Jungle camping), and one River side Camping.

Trek Details:
Mumbai to Mumbai Trek
Trek Leader: Vikram
Type: long hilly trek
Grade: Medium
Endurance: High

Chonda ghat:
This is a gentle pass connecting Chhonda in the Konkan to Ghatghar (~700mtrs) village on the Bhandardhara plateau. One can have a breathtaking view of the Ghatghar Kokan kada from here.

Sandhan Valley
Brilliant & deep narrow rock floored ravine between the two high walls of mountain range. At some places its width is less than 3 ft so that at some places sun rays unable to reach. So it’s called valley of shadow. To go in the valley you have to cross 2-3 water pools, which is till once chest level. At the end of valley you get magnificent view of high cliffs & deep valleys.

Ratangad:

Ratan means Jewel in Hindi. This hill fort is indeed jewel in all the hill forts here in Sahyadri. Ratangad has still the remains of fortress with bastions and stone walls. Cave on the top is cut from the rock face and can easily accommodate 25 people at a time. Water cisterns are usually filled with water throughout the year and trekkers use them as water source. Eastern side of the fort has some fortification left; one can see Rani Mahal here. Climbing up on the northern side, one can see natural orifice (hole in rock, locally called nedhe) in the rock face, mostly made by wind. This orifice is big enough to be seen from base of the fort and can accommodate about 6-7 people at a time. Strong winds can be experienced at this orifice. Climbing down the nedhe to the western end of the fort leads closest to the Khuta pinnacle via triambak Darwaza.

Kaladgad
A small fort near pethe chi wadi, which can be climbed in an hour. This fort gives an awesome view of the surroundings. One can get a very good sunset view from this fort.

Harishchandragad

The fort is quite ancient, considered to be from the Medieval period. The Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic Tatvasaar), used to meditate on Taramati/Rohidas in 14th century. The caves are also from the same period.Harishchandragad was captured by the Marathas in 1747 from the Moguls.
