Dapoli
Dapoli is 215 km away from Mumbai. It is also called the "Mini Mahabaleshwar" (Mahabaleshwar is a hill station in Maharashtra) because of its cool climate throughout the year. Dapoli is also the city which gave birth to many historic idols including Lokmanya Tilak, Sane Guruji, Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, Wrangler Paranjape, and Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar. It is close to the Arabian Sea (approx 8 km away) and acts as the main town (Taluka Headquarters) for several other small surrounding villages such as Anjarle, Sarang, Bhopan, Harnai, Dabhol, Navse (Bharti Ship Yard), Unhavare, Jaalgaon, Gimhavane, Asud, Vanand, Kherdi, Karde, Murud and Umberghar. Jaalgaon, a village in Dapoli, was awarded the "sant gadgebaba gram swachatta" award for cleanest village by the Maharashtra government. Dapoli is nowadays developing as a tourist destination due its climate, tourist places, beaches, and scenery.
Dapoli is separated from the Sayhadri range by the Khed taluka. Dapoli has a seaboard of 50 km which stretches from Burondi, Kelshi to Dabhol. The coastline differs little in its general characteristics from that of other parts of Kokan. It is densely covered by coconut farms. The principal rivers are Bharja in the north and Vashishthi in the south. There is also a small river called Jog which flows through Sarang, Tadil, and into the Arabian sea.
Despite being only 7 km away from the coast of Arabian sea, the town is located at an altitude of around 800 feet (240 m).
Dapoli was the first Nagar Panchayat in India.
Murud / Karde Beach
Located on the rugged Konkan coastline, Murud is a small town about 11km from Dapoli. A long, scenic stretch of a beach with swaying palms and a beautiful, ancient Durga Devi temple are its primary attractions. It is also known as Murud - Harnai.
A very quiet beach, highly attractive for meditation, Harnai beach is
renowned as the gateway romantic beach in Harnai. The inflows of the
tourists are growing multitudes year by year in this unspoiled beauty of
nature.
This beach is famed for its clean softy shores and safe waters for fun filled activities as well as for swimming. The palm trees lined up adds a scenic natural greenish background for the calm beach. It is really an experience spending few hours to few days in the cool ambience of beach. This is a weekend destination to many of the Mumbai and Pune populace to escape from the busy city life.
Anjarle Kadyawarcha Ganpati
Anjarle is a village in the Dapoli taluka, Ratnagiri district and is known for the Kadyawarcha Ganpati temple (कड्याचा गणपती) which means Ganapati on a cliff. This temple was originally constructed using wooden pillars around 1150. It was renovated between 1768 to 1780. Until the recent construction of bridge across the Anjarle creek and the building of a road up to the temple, pilgrims had to cross Anjarle creek (Jog River) in a boat, before climbing the hill using steps which pass through Anjarle village.
Harnai port is the main fishing village. Every evening hundreds of fishing boats come back after fishing and gather to auction their catch. The fish auction is the essential trade step between fish landings and the trade. Business worth lakhs of rupees is carried out daily between 4 pm to 7 pm. Witnessing the fish auctions here is a awe inspiring experience and you could also hitch a ride in a bullock cart here!!
Harnai port should be one of the essential part of any Dapoli vacation not just for the auctions. You could vist the Kanakdurg fort with a lighthouse offering splendid views of the ocean Suvarnadurg fort and the fishing village. You can also visit the historic Suvarnadurg fort from here and enjoy a boat ride too!
Suvarnadurg , Kanakdurg , Goa Fort and Fatehgad
Suvarnadurg Fort, also known as Harnai Bunder, lies off the beautiful Harnai coast. It is a small sea port built by great emperor Shivaji to effectively counter the attacks by Sindhis. Of late the fort had been converted to a ship building port in Maharashtra.
The Fort was exceptional in its appearance; most of the parts are in ruins. It brings the remembrance of the construction abilities of Maratha architects. It is a fort visited by many tourists, especially those who are fond of architecture, history and archeology.

Murud has a lot of beach resorts amidst the coconut plantations. Delicious, fresh seafood includes the likes of Pomfret, Kingfish (Surmai) and Prawns straight from the Arabian Sea. You can also enjoy pure vegetarian, home-made Konkani cuisine at some of the houses nearby. The beach itself with its soft sand and wide expanses is well suited for walking, jogging or simply freaking out. You will probably be able to watch the white bellied sea eagle, white backed vultures and sea gulls. Olive Ridley sea turtles are also spotted here.
Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, who established the first Indian University for women (SNDT), hailed from Murud. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1958. You can also visit the museum which is dedicated to this great man.
