Dear Mates, as a part of an endeavor continuum to provide
you new, fresh & unique ways to visit unique places, we at Trek Mates India
has come up with series of monthly Cycle Trips. Every month a fresh cycling
trip will be organized to a unique destination.
We invite you to Feb
Month Cycling Trip to enchanting Korlai Fort & Light House on 10th
Feb 2012.
Korlai Fort: Situated
further southward to Revdanda is the fort of Korlai, which is quite beautiful. It is
surrounded by sea on three sides.
This is not a tall fort. The total height is about 275 m.
The most fascinating one is the beach here. The blue ocean on one side and the
creek named “Kundalika” on the eastern end create scenery. The fort is situated
at the mouth of the creek and has been admired by great historians like Pandit
Mahadevshastri Joshi. The fort has historic importance also. In 1521,
Portuguese first built a machi here at the Rock of Chual. Later second Burhan
Nizam of Revdanda erected the fort here. In 1602 Portuguese themselves
demolished the most of the part of fort except the citadel, the ramparts,
storage house and the machi. This fort was later captured by Marathas &
then became part of independent India.
