Dasara is a most extravagant festival of Mysore. Since centuries Mysore's Royal
family has celebrated this festival on a grand scale. The heritage city of
mysore is at its vibrant best during the 10 -day dasara festival.
According to Hindu mythology the festival celebrates and commemorates the victory of Goddess Chamundeshwari after slaying the demon Mahishasura and the triumph of good over evil. The main attraction is the procession or Jumboo Savari of Royal Elephants and horses. In this procession the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari is kept in the golden howdah on top of a decorated elephant. The procession begins at the Mysore Palace and ends at the Banni Mantapa grounds, traveling a distance of about 2.5 miles. The procession is followed by a torch light procession in the evening and a stunning display of fireworks.
History: The Dasara festivities were first started by the Wodeyar King, Raja Wodeyar I (1578-1617 CE) in the year 1610. It was during the reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in the year 1805, when the king started the tradition of having a special durbar in the Mysore Palace which was attended by members of the royal family, special invitees, officials and the masses.
Mysore Palace is dazzlingly illuminated by almost 100,000 light bulbs, nightly from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m., during the dasera festival. Numerous music and dance performances take place at the Palace and other venues. There's also a food festival, film festival, heritage walk, wrestling competition, and sightseeing to local tourist places.

Queen of Nilgiris -Ooty
Ooty or Udhagai is located amongst the
Nilgiris of western ghats. It was a
popular summer and weekend getaway for the British during the colonial days. In
1827 Ooty became the official sanatorium
and the summer capital of the Madras
Presidency.
This scenery stunning place is serene with
beautiful parks and Dodabetta peak. The journey on a misty day in the mini
train is simply breathtaking. The picturesque lake, the evergreen gardens, the hilly mountains, hot
tea and the cold climate are enough to make a person want to stay in Ooty
forever!
