Some details about Matheran and Ladder route:
Matheran is situated in the Matheran range of
sahyadris at a height of 2516 feet. With more than eight to ten different
routes, Matheran (2516 feet) is the ultimate destination for the trekker,
naturalist and outdoor enthusiast. It is literally a forest on top of the hill
(mathe means head and raan means forest). The dense forest cover, teeming bird
life, long walks and flora and fauna make this an all-time favorite. The best
part is that it’s pollution-free as no vehicles are allowed in the hill
station.
While trekking up to Matheran hills from chowk, it’s a long
flat walk and then steep ascend which in turn also have some risky rock
patches. There are three ladders fixed on those patches. First ladder is made
of iron while other two ladders are of wood and bamboo, thus making it very
risky affair especially in Monsoon.
According to local legend, Shivaji rode up this route on
horseback. Locals also call this route as Shivaji Ladder route.
The itinerary for the Trek is as given below:
Take return ticket of Karjat.
Catch the following Karjat Fast local and board any compartment which you feel comfortable to board as the local will be crowded.

Post Breakfast reach Dasturi Naka & catch a cab to
Neral. You can opt to stay back in Matheran and spend your Sunday at Matheran
The cost of the trek will be INR 400/- per head, including
all transportation from Karjat till Neral,

Things To Be carried:
Identity proof (must)
Torch with Extra Batteries (must)
Good trekking shoes (must)
A bottle of water (at least 2 Ltrs)
Warm Jacket to wear in the morning,
Extra Pair of Clothes,
Some ready to eat food. Plum cakes, Biscuits etc.,
Medicines those if
u require usually (Optional)
A haversack to put in all the things to be carried....so
that one has ones hands free while trekking. Please do not carry sling bags or
Jholas.
Please avoid wearing Gold and other ornaments.
It might
be raining these days, so pack your bags accordingly to save them from getting
wet. Double pack your valuables in plastic bags.
